Glad to hear you are having a good time in France!

Good post/question as well. I went to Ottawa for Canada Day and had some similar thoughts. Keep in mind that Canada is only 140 years old. There is simply no way that we could have the same depth as China or any European countries. We do have the Aboriginals which go back much further, and sure enough they have lots of "culture".

A couple years ago I was in Toronto for Canada Day and the performers were Jamaicans, Chinese.. all performing their traditions. The only thing about Canada was the flag. The main difference between Canada and the States is that in the States, you become American, whereas in Canada, it seems to be most 1st and 2nd (and 3rd?) generation Canadians are more patriotic to their original country. I don't know why this is since they must have left for a reason. For how is Canada #1, thats all the proof I need -- everyone else wants to come here.

Jon has a very good point, there is lots of culture outside of Toronto. In Ottawa this year it was definitely Canada first, and one really cool performance was a mix of Punjabi singing and rock and some sort of traditional dancing. I would love if thats what Canadian culture could be... taking the best of all the different cultures we have and mixing them together?

Wanna start a website for this with me? ;)

Canada has so much culture to call its own. Think outside Ontario and then you'll see the north, the west coast, the east coast. Those are all distinct people with their own history, art, food, ect..

Glad you trip is going well. Post some pictures. Did you go to the consulate for Canada Day?
